Students were assigned a Literature Circle book on Monday. They have determined what their reading schedule is, and they have a weekly reading assignment. Do not forget to bring your Literature Circle Book every Friday!

Students brought home the summer reading list for 7th grade. Please choose one of the four books to read in order to be preparred for the 7th grade writing prompt at the beginning of nexr year.

Vacation is here! I am so sorry that I have not posted in a minute, things have been on the crazy side of crazy around here!

Our fieldtrip was a fantastic success, thank you to everyone who helped to make it possible and run smoothly. Your child is bringing home their History Portfolio and English Notebook. Please look over all of the amazing work that they did over this first semester, empty all of the papers out and send it back to school when we return.

I am offering an extra credit project for those that are interested (information attached). This is a good way to offer a little bit of cushion or wiggle room in case of unexpected absences or low scores. It is also a good way for your child to dive into their own personal history and heritage. Let them be as creative as possible!

Because the project is being offered as extra credit it is only worth 20 points, not the amount listed on the directions.

Suggested Reading: Harry Potter 1

We will write essays comparing and contrasting villians, one being Voldemort from Harry Potter. It is not required for your child to read the book because I will supply the articles needed. However, it might be nice for them to be able to discuss the novel with the other students and to have the background information.

Biography Book Report. Students must READ (not do research on) a Biographical Book about anyone (alive or dead): movie star, president, sports hero.

They will complete the I am Poem and a poster, follow the instructions on the book report given in class (as soon as I scan it, it will be posted here as well).

The more creative the better!! I will give extra credit points to anyone who dresses as their character as well.

We have been reading a novel called Maniac Magee. The students have been creating a story map (different from the book report) that summarizes the book chapter by chapter with an illustration. The students will transfer the rough draft onto a poster (11x18) for the final project. Please check that they are keeping up and they may start on their poster now so they have less work later.

Students will write 3 paragraphs (started in class), 1= Obama, 1= Romney, 1= Both, use your Venn Diagram.

This week is Roots Review Week!! There is not a new list of roots, instead we will review 1-5 and retake the 50 roots test. The students will receive which ever grade is highest (not an average, this is not in response to low scores, it is part of the unit).

Other interesting and fun news:
We are having a candy drive, now until 10/28.
There will be a Trick-orTreat Hallway on 10/30, 2:00-3:30. All are welcome for candy and facepaint.

Remember to send fieldtrip money (6th grade only)!!!!!

Students are working on an imaginary passport. The instructions are on the shhet provided in class.

For extra credit, the students may create a 4 picture photo album depicting them at the site of their choice. The picture must include a caption that describes what we are seeing in the picture. Students may draw, use the internet ot photoshop to create their album.

Watch the debate (it doesn't have to be the whole thing, but at least 20 minutes). Write a reflection, at least 1/2 a page, include who you think won the section that you watched, who you think had the best arguments or ideas etc.

Include one quote, don't forget to tell me who said it and why you think it's especially strong or weak.

Today your child received their report card and their grade report.

The grade report lists eveything that your child has done and what is missing. They have the opportunity to make-up any missing assignments and test between now and the 15 week report card (11-12). Please do all work and turn it in as a packet, not one page at a time.

Please not that the grade on the report card is from Monday and the grade on the grade sheet is from Friday, therefore the grade sheet is more accurate and current.

** I had some difficulties with my computer this morning so the history list is a little shorter than it should be. I apologize for that, I am working to get it fixed.

Dear Parents,
I am sorry, I just found out that the parent portal (on the LAUSD website) is not yet up and running. If you bring the forminto the counseling office they will put your name on a waiting list to receive the password. My thought is that the more parents they have on that list, the faster they will do this!

So that you have an accurate accounting of your students grades, I will print a grade sheet for your child. They will recieve the grade sheet at the 10 week, this is also when they have the opportunity to turn in any make-up work.
