Assignment:                Get a shoebox and create a representation of a favorite scene from Holes. You may use any materials that you choose and you may decorate or cover the box any way you choose.
 
Where:                        This will be done at home.
 
Example Ideas:            -- Create Camp Green Lake and the holes that boys have to dig. Make miniature cardboard figures for some of the boys and one or more adults. Use sand to cover the bottom of your box and make small shovels.
                                  --Create the wreck room, where the boys got to relax with a broken TV set and broken furniture.

"Vocabulary development" worksheet is due Tuesday, 9/25. This worksheet asks you to find at least 4 words that are unfamiliar to you in your book. Provide a definition, synonym/ antonym, and prefixes or suffixes if there are any. Also use the word in a complete sentence. You may do more than one worksheet for extra credit.

"Book report summary" worksheet is due Friday, 10/5. This is a graphic organizer to help you keep track of the important elements of your book. You may write on another piece of paper to give yourself more room. We will turn this information into paragraphs for later assignments after Oct.5.

Welcome to 6th grade. I hope everyone had an enjoyable first day. I provided a welcome letter to students in my science and/or English classes today.  I would like parents/guardians to review the letter and return the third page to me with a signature. I am especially interested in knowing if students have food allergies or diet restrictions. I sometimes provide treats, and I will accommodate any special needs by offering a replacement item at a parent request.
 
Students also enrolled in my advisory class received an additonal letter from me, and a packet from the school that should be signed and returned as soon as possible.
