Description
Life Science is an introduction to biology.  The textbook we are using is Holt California Life Science.

In Life Science, a number of topics are covered, including:

  • The electromagnetic spectrum;
  • Light and living things;
  • The characteristics of living things;
  • Cells;
  • Genetics and heredity;
  • Evolution

Much of the work in this class will be project-based group activities.  Students will often be called upon to conduct research.  Students will also collaborate with other students from home using the internet, so access to the internet connection is highly desirable.  If your child does not have access to the internet at home, all branches of the Los Angeles Public Library have free internet access.  I will make sure that my students have sufficient time to complete their research by scheduling assignments well in advance of the due dates.

I will post homework here on the Hale website, but more complete information will be available on my own site.  You can access my site by clicking on this link

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!
DUE MONDAY, 10/22/12

Tobacco products come in packages that contain health warnings.  People who already use tobacco products are addicted, and so those warnings may not have much effect.  But what about people who don't already smoke?  How do tobacco companies advertise a product that will kill?  Since there are new smokers everyday, it's obvious that their advertising is effective.

To earn your extra credit, bring in an example of an ad for cigarettes.  Write a short paragraph that explains who you think the ad is aimed at, what the ad makes you feel about cigarettes, and what "lifestyle" you think the ad is projecting.

100 POINT EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY

DUE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 -- NO EXCEPTIONS

You must write an essay of no less than 250 words in which you discuss one or more of the following topics:

  1. What did you learn from the GMO Project about the importance of managing your time?
  2. What did you learn from the GMO Project about the importance of following directions?

Assignment

Genetically-Modified Foods

You will research the subject of genetically-modified foods, take a position either for or against the use of genetically-modified organisms, and create a presentation.  Your presentation may be any of the following:

  • poster;
  • PowerPoint;
  • website;
  • video;
  • podcast.

You may use the internet, books, magazines, scientific journals, and newspapers when conducting your research.  You must create a proper bibliography using MLA format.  You may use EasyBib or other bibliography tools.

Remember that the internet can be a very misleading place.  Anyone who wants to can create a website and they can say whatever they want to.  Just because someone says something does not mean that it is true or scientifically viable.

Start now by conducting some basic preliminary research.  I will provide you with additional details on Monday, August 20, 2012.

This project is due on Wednesday, August 29.

Due:

Assignment

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!

If you look at produce at the supermarket (peaches, pears, plums, etc.) you will notice that they each have a small label on them with a 4 or 5 digit numeric code.  Do you know what the code means?  Find out how to deciper the code, write it down, and bring it to class on Monday.

This extra credit assignment is due on Monday, August 27.

Your homework will be turned in along with the questions that you worked on in class.
