- Description
-
Life Science is an introduction to biology. The textbook we are using is Holt California Life Science.
In Life Science, a number of topics are covered, including:- The electromagnetic spectrum;
- Light and living things;
- The characteristics of living things;
- Cells;
- Genetics and heredity;
- Evolution
Much of the work in this class will be project-based group activities. Students will often be called upon to conduct research. Students will also collaborate with other students from home using the internet, so access to the internet connection is highly desirable. If your child does not have access to the internet at home, all branches of the Los Angeles Public Library have free internet access. I will make sure that my students have sufficient time to complete their research by scheduling assignments well in advance of the due dates.
I will post homework here on the Hale website, but more complete information will be available on my own site. You can access my site by clicking on this link.

Assignment
Genetically-Modified Foods
You will research the subject of genetically-modified foods, take a position either for or against the use of genetically-modified organisms, and create a presentation. Your presentation may be any of the following:
- poster;
- PowerPoint;
- website;
- video;
- podcast.
You may use the internet, books, magazines, scientific journals, and newspapers when conducting your research. You must create a proper bibliography using MLA format. You may use EasyBib or other bibliography tools.
Remember that the internet can be a very misleading place. Anyone who wants to can create a website and they can say whatever they want to. Just because someone says something does not mean that it is true or scientifically viable.
Start now by conducting some basic preliminary research. I will provide you with additional details on Monday, August 20, 2012.
This project is due on Wednesday, August 29.
